Roisin Murphy's erratic style

Europe's disco diva Roisin Murphy might not be a huge pop star (in fact I love she is not in the mainstream) but she is an untiringly muse for couturiers and an undoubtedly style icon.

Her fashion sense matches the eclectic music she's known for, a cutting-edge electronic, pop and dance mix, with references going from her idol Grace Jones to David Bowie circa Ziggy Stardust era.

A trend to keep: the Maxi-Dress

As opposed to last years mini length this summer maxi dress was on everyone's mind, both loved and hated. First maxi dresses appeared in major spring/summer 2008 collections and then they were seen on all "it" girls of the moment. While a one-color dress looks too occasion wear or beachwear (if it's jersey), a printed maxi-dress is the easiest way to an elegant look for daywear. Romantic, flowing, printed long-dresses seems to be this summer's hit and not only.

Bohemian Summer

Inspired by the 60s and the 70s fashions, boho style (bohemian) has returned and looks more chic than ever. Boho-chic style keeps main hippie features: ethnic influences, DIY looks (tie-dye and patchwork), raw fabrics and materials (canvas, straw, wood) mixing them with heirloom pieces like lace dresses, embroidered linen blouses and crochet shawls, vintage men's hats, shoes and belts but also with glam and modern accessories like the latest "it" bag or the ultimate pair of shoes, metallic sparkles or fancy jewelry.

Style on a budget: Rodarte spring/summer 2008

Flapper style is one of my favorite moments in fashion so I'm glad that this season designers paid more attention to it. I was particularly inspired by the modern-flapper look Rodarte showed on its spring 2008 collection: I love the floppy hat and the sheer, loose clothes. Gladiator heels and fingerless gloves bring the needed modern vibe.

8 March Outfit

I wish you all fashionistas out there a Happy International Women's Day and here is my idea for a perfect 8 March outfit: sweet, feminine but also very modern thanks to masculine accents such as a loose silver blazer and a wide watch cuff.

Style on a budget: Balenciaga Fall 2007 Look

The fashion world is crazy about this season's Balenciaga collection. Everyone wants or speaks about those schoolboy blazers, fringe ethnic scarves and "patchwork" dresses. I must admit that I'm not a Nicolas Ghesquière fan but I love the multicultural feeling of this collection and the fact that finally his collection looks wearable. And those preppy looks...
As everyone else dreams about the navy blazer I'm more attracted by the white look. I must have a thing on white this season.

Style on a budget: Recreating a Marc Jacobs look

Marc Jacobs is one of my favorite designers, not necessarily for his designs, which aren’t that brilliant, but for the impeccable styling of his shows and for the straightforward American spirit he sends forth.

Marc is a great stylist and I always find out new ways to wear basic wardrobe pieces or new color combinations. His Fall 2007 collection has a retro vibe, straight lines reminding of twenties Art Deco fashion and of the late eighties high society. Or so it seems to me.

I especially like this outfit because of that spicy red leather pleated skirt. I looked for a similar one but all I could come with was a straight red leather skirt I found on eBay.

Are suspenders this fall's trend?

I'm not sure what to think about the suspenders trouser pants/overalls trend. 70s inspired wide-leg pants, in neutral shades look fine but you should be careful what you wear them with. Stick to a feminine classy look: a delicate bow neck shirt or a cashmere turtleneck and definetely high heels shoes and a structured tote bag. As for those denim shorts with suspenders they look like early 90s kids or teenagers outfit. If you are teenager I guess they would look cool teamed up with striped tees and chunky boots for a grunge look. As for the quirky looking skinny sky pants - i don't see the point.

How to wear the leather biker jacket

Did you recently bought a leather jacket and don’t know how to wear it? I’m sure planning to invest in one as soon as possible. But it seems that the fashion elite have developed a sort of a uniform: a casual look with skinny jeans and white/grey tees or a more feminine style by teaming the leather jacket with shift dresses.

Breakthrough trend: The White Pants

Up till now a summer piece, the white pair of pants has transcended the seasons’ limits. According to fall trends it’s more than ok to wear white in fall, in fact creamy white and ivory white have been spotted around in many of this season’s collections.

Is the mini shift dress still in fashion?

And the verdict is…Yes! Still in fashion, the mini shift dress can be worn later this fall with opaque tights and ankle boots.

The Cropped Short Sleeve Jacket

A key piece for the past spring season, the cropped short sleeve jacket is a must have for fall. Combinations have changed, though. Leave away for next summer those breezy shorts, flirty skirts and flowing dresses. Fashion designers have come up with hot new looks.

Are Bermuda shorts still in fashion?

I was more than happy to find out that knee shorts are still in style. Browsing through fall 2007-winter 2008 fashion collections I’ve discovered new stylish combinations. This season though it’s all about fit and a narrower silhouette so you should wear those narrower Bermudas you’ve bought last fall and leave those safari flowing shorts for the next summer season.

What to wear with your graphic printed skirt?

Fall of 2007Fall of 2007

Have you fell in love with the 60s-70s style and bought more than one skirt with abstract/geometric print this summer? Well, don’t worry; this is a perfect piece for getting into fall mood.

The Floral Print Dress

No doubt a must have for summer; the floral print dress can be worn successfully in the up-coming fall season. Now you can wear it simple, showing your tanned bare legs, accessorized only with flip-flops, peep-toe shoes or platform sandals and a chic small purse.
